1. Acknowledge that you are sinner and even your best intentions and behavior are not enough to earn salvation:
“There is no one righteous; no, not one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. They have all turned away... There is no one who does good, no, not so much as one.” & "...for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:9-12, & 23)
"All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;" (Isaiah 64:6)
2. Believe that Jesus Christ died in your place to pay the penalty of sin:
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)
"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me." (John 14:6)
"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!” (Acts 4:12)
"But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him." (John 3:16-17)
3. Confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior:
"...if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him. For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:9-13)
"Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand." (Romans 5:1-2)
"...for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast."(Ephesians 2:8-9)
If you want to become a Christian, admit that your a sinner, believe in God, and accept Christ's sacrifice for your sins by praying the following prayer or a similar one in your own words:
"Lord,
I admit I am a sinner. I ask for your forgiveness.
I accept you died on the cross instead of me as the penalty for my sin.
I accept your gift of salvation because of your mercy and grace and not based on anything I have done.
Cleanse me and make me Yours. By faith I receive You into my heart as the Son of God, Savior, and Lord of my life.
Amen"
You can now be assured in your salvation and trust in God's Word and promises:
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." (Romans 8:1)
"For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)
The way forward:
As a Christian you now need to begin to grow in not living "according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." This is a lifelong process of sanctification (growth & transformation) through prayer, reading the Bible, worship, fellowship (becoming an active part of a group of fellow believers), and service with other believers. You get saved by faith but "faith, if it has no works, is dead." (James 2:17)
